I was just walking back from doing a lecture and passed through the University’s hallowed West Mall where all of the activists gather (during the Vietnam era, the administration restricted demonstrations to the West Mall after planting massive flower beds in the middle in order to make it easier to control the crowds). I heard a loud voice, and realized as I walked through that it was coming from a portable radio (“boom box,” if you will) sitting on a table manned by the Young Conservatives of Texas (the same group that sponsored the “ACLU Christmas display” a couple of months ago). So, I stopped tuning it out and found myself amused to hear Rush Limbaugh ranting on about how global climate change is a fraud and it’s just being used by the Democrats to distract the government from the War on Terror.
Wha-huh?
The irony, of course, is that Rush Limbaugh puts out so much hot air all by himself that he’s probably responsible for more than a little global warming personally. Also, I was unaware of his degree in physics — the one that would be needed to adequately determine whether the recent UN report was truthful or not. At the point I walked through, he was saying something about how the seas aren’t actually rising, it’s just that New Orleans and the Louisana Delta are sinking.
The best part of the whole display was the young man from YCT at the table, who had a self-satisfied smug grin on his face. I wasn’t aware that global warming was a liberal/conservative issue, but apparently it is.
I must e-mail everyone I’ve ever met and tell them that global warming isn’t happening. Rush said so. Then I’ll go buy a Hummer.
It must be Monday …
