Whole Lotta Nothin’ Goin On

It’s The Day Before A Long Weekend and so, predictably, there’s pretty much no one in the office.  I do have some tasks to accomplish and am moving on them … slowly.  (It’s also a three cup of coffee kind of day.)

Brian tweeted his annoyance with coworkers who show up expecting the federal government to grant early release for employees.  I can commiserate, just not at the Memorial Day holiday.

For the past several years, a coworker-slash-friend who is normally the most observant of details and–to borrow a phrase from Three Times One Minus One–rememberful, has experience a bizarre localized amnesia on Good Friday and sworn that “last year” we got early release.

Friend: “Everyone over here is checking the home page constantly.”
Me: “Why?”
Friend: “To see if they’re closing us at noon.”
Me: “Yeah, right.  They haven’t done that in years.”
Friend: “They did it last year.”
Me: “No, they didn’t.”
Friend: “Yes, they did.”
Me: “No, they didn’t.  We haven’t gotten early release since 2003.”
Friend: “I’m positive they gave us early release last year. Everyone here remembers it.”
Me: “The last time we got early release was 2003.  I remember because that was the year I went to India and my guidebook to Bombay had come in that morning and I couldn’t get out of my parking spot for an hour so I sat in my car and read the damned book waiting for the traffic backup to ease.”
Friend: “I swear we got out early last year.”
Me: {typing} “I’m looking at an e-mail you sent me at 2:45 pm on Good Friday last year.  We did not close early.”
Friend: “How did you managed to look up when Good Friday was last year and then find an e-mail I sent that afternoon so quickly?”
Me: “I use Google Index™.  Google Index™.  When you absolutely have to have irrelevant facts at your fingertips—right now.”
Friend: “You’re a dork.”

At any rate.  There’s not much going on in my part of the world, but I’m managing to keep somewhat busy.  And happy long weekend, everyone!
