So Much for World Peace

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

I was idly flipping around the Web when all of a sudden I ran across the news coming out of Mumbai about the terrorist attacks and the hostage situation in the Taj Hotel (which I’ve stayed in, and that, as I write this, is shown on fire both on CNN/IBN and Al-Jazeera).

I suppose it’s kind of silly to say things like, “I don’t know why things like this upset me.”  There’s a perfectly obvious reason why these things upset me.  And now I’m back where I was on 9/11 and 7/7 — flipping back and forth between as many sources of news as I can find to try to figure out what’s happening.

I dunno if I believe in God, but I’m praying anyway.

So much for world peace.

My Civic Duty

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

On Tuesday night, Ray and I decided to exercise our civic duty and went to vote.  Here in Texas, we have early voting, and in our county (which is, I’ve learned, purple on the political map — not as red as some would like it to be, and not as blue either) all early voting is done on electronic voting machines.

I’ve read the stories about the voting machines and the errors and whatnot, but the experience seemed to be error free.  This shouldn’t be confused with “it was easy.”  No, with only four voting machines, we waited in line for nearly 10 minutes, and by the time we left, the line extended out of the room where voting was being held, around the corner, and was starting to snake down the hall.

I had a whiplash moment when a woman in front of us asked if the print could be made larger because she has difficulty seeing.  “No,” said the perky, helpful volunteer, “but we have a magnifying sheet you can use.”  I don’t know whether the woman was able to finally read for herself because my turn came next and my back was to her, but while I was standing there, the volunteer seemed to be reading the screen to her.

Seriously–at however many thousand dollars a pop, you’d think that one of the things they could work into the voting machines is the ability to make the font larger and, I dunno, text to speech.  Where’s the ADA when you need them?

I grow weary of this political campaign and am desperate for it to end.  Yesterday, Sarah Palin went after Obama for being associates with Rashid Khalidi, a professor at Columbia who, according to CNN, is “a harsh critic of U.S. foreign policy toward Israel and has accused the country of ‘occupying’ Palestinian territories.”  Apparently CNN is so afraid of the neocons that they have to put “occupying” in quotes because there’s no consensus on this point?  Give me a break.

By the way, in case anyone missed it, al-Qaeda is endorsing McCain.

I’m ready for it to be over, one way or the other.  I know which way I’d prefer (in case it’s not obvious), but it’s been four years of ridiculousness on the campaign trail, and four years of ridiculousness in the White House.  Either way, it’s going to be a 50% reduction in the ridiculous factor.

Are you ready?  I know I am.

Just So We’re Clear …

… I do not ever need to see Vladimir Putin shirtless again, thank you.

At breakfast in the hotel lobby yesterday morning, they were playing CNN (I mistook it for Fox News … I can’t decide whether I was relieved or horrified when I realized my mistake). I was down there for about 45 minutes, and the bit about Putin posing shirtless was on four times.

Yes, he’s fit. He also looks like Mr. Potatohead. And just because he has pecs doesn’t mean that I want to see them. I mean, our last president was apparently hung like an anaconda. Where was the news about that? (Well, other than that damned blue dress … )

So, thanks CNN, but I’m living Putin free. If I want beefcake, I can just dial up Fleshbot from here on out all by myself.

Still here

I wasn’t going to write any more posts about the rain until I got my first panicked, “Are you OK?” e-mail this morning. (That always makes me laugh: if my house had been flooded out and I’d been forced to flee in the middle of the night, what are the chances that I’d be able to check my e-mail first thing in the morning?)

We’re having a bit of a rain problem down here in Central Texas — we’ve gotten upwards of 10 inches of rain thus far (19 in some areas) and it just keeps on coming. The worst of the flooding — as seen on CNN! — is around a small town called Marble Falls in the Hill Country where several creeks converge into a lake in a spectacular gorge. Marble Falls is about thirty miles from here (as the crow flies). There are lots of high creeks and overflowing rivers around here — fortunately, we don’t live close to any of them. I left the house this morning to take the dog to the vet for her surgery and didn’t have any trouble getting across town.

I will admit to reliving one of my childhood fears in the middle of the night — I was always convinced that my house would get hit by a tornado as a kid because in Ohio they could do tornado drills constantly at school without ever telling us that they conveniently doubled as air raid drills. Hence, the constant reinforcement that Mother Nature wants you dead worked its way into my psyche and it comes back in rough weather. About 1 AM the wind picked up and the rain got really heavy (according to the weather service, about 2 inches in 15 minutes) and it gets my heart pumping every time. Then, of course, because I was up, the dog got up and started whining which put me on edge … it was a bit of a rough night’s sleep.

But we’re still here. The new sod in the back yard is extremely happy, as are most of the plants in the garden (including, unfortunately, the weeds … and the tomato plants, which are massive and covered in blooms but have yet to produce a single tomato). And so, for me, no refugee camps loom in my future. That’s really more Will’s thing anyway.

CNN Goes Freudian

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

Apparently, CNN International — the version of CNN that we don’t get here in the US — made a little boo-boo the other day when running news about British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s resignation. Normally CNN International is vastly superior to the domestic product and its more inane version, Headline News, which features the same vapid coverage with smaller words.

On this occasion, however, the person in charge of captions was either typing too fast, or they’re a little dyslexic and their deepest, darkest Freudian fantasies came out when they were unable to tell the difference between two world leaders whose names both start with “B”:

Bush resigns -- not

Obviously, this isn’t a plot from the pinko leftist commies to discredit the president — it only ran once and was corrected pretty quickly. It is, however, highly amusing, and I intend to pull up this image many times during the remaining 18 months of campaigning for the White House…
