Howdy, 12 of 12ers!  Happy New Year!  I hope your new year is off to a good start.

12 of 12 is Chad’s idea – all hail Chad.  He claims this is the last year, but maybe if we collectively whine loud enough …

I’m a late riser today—I’m driving out to San Angelo, Texas, in the afternoon and see no pressing (no pun intended) need to go into the office first thing.  Ray is home, too, as he got laid off last week (more on that if you’re curious).  We’re doing fine – he’s signed up for extra classes this semester, and we’ve got enough to tide us over for a while.  It’s just, y’know, a completely sucky situation.

This is Chloe.  Chloe is Natalie’s cat.  Chloe has significant disdain for everyone who is not Natalie, and is generally homicidal toward anyone who is not Natalie and also male.  Chloe hates me, and has tried on more than one occasion to kill me.  (It probably has something to do with the fact that Chloe usually sees me when I’m coming to pick Natalie up for a business trip, meaning that I’m the reason that Chloe will be alone for a while.)  If you are a cat person and making, “Oooh, lookattheprettykitty” noises, please know that Chloe will eat you alive if given the chance.

This is her innocent look, which is supposed to lull you into coming close enough for her to pounce.  Don’t let her fool you.

2:45 pm: Pontotoc

Between Llano (that’s “lan-o” – never mind how it should be pronounced) and Brady on the way to San Angelo is this little ghost-town-in-the-making (seriously: three quarters of the buildings are either derelict or boarded up) called Pontotoc.  It has this little old stone farmhouse that has no roof walls or floor, but it’s always intrigued me, so I stopped to take photos.

Decor aside, the food at Armandita’s cafe – which is the sort of place you’d probably drive right by without blinking – is good.  How do I know this?  Most of the clientele spoke Spanish.  This is always a good sign for a Mexican restaurant.  Oh, and the handwritten note from Bobby Flay extolling the virtues of the meal he had there helps too (although it does make me wonder what the heck Bobby Flay was doing in San Angelo, Texas.)

… and now I’m in my hotel room editing photos. How was YOUR 12th?

Yes, I’m a day late and a dollar short, but *meh.

I’m not sure whether it’s that we’re getting older, that our usual party hosts are, like everyone else in the free world, feeling the pinch of a hard economy, or that we were just feeling less celebratory than usual, but the New Year’s gathering – which was nice, don’t get me wrong – came to an early end.  And I’ll be honest—I didn’t mind so much.

I was annoyed, however, that we weren’t able to watch the ball drop in Times Square live.  Apparently, the networks have finally caught on to the fact that we’re not all on the east coast and started tape-delaying the NYE celebrations, which meant that at midnight in New York, which is 11 pm here, we were almost unable to do our usual “one hour left” countdown—until, that is, that I discovered we could watch the proceedings en directo por Univision.

Anyway.  New Year’s Day was a slow affair: I took down the Christmas decorations, discovering in the process that I’d left most of the good ones off the tree this year (Ray acquired a new, ornament specific container, which I may have slightly mocked but did turn out to be cursed useful).  I made chili, not because it’s a tradition (the traditional Tex Mex foods for New Year’s are either menudo or pozole), but because it’s cursed cold down here and it seemed appropriate.  Elliot went home with his mother, and, as predicted, Mocha started moping even though she spent the entire time we were dogsitting pretending she was annoyed by his presence.

And I posted my first picture to my 365 project.

What does 2010 bring to the table?  Well, here’s what I’ve got penciled in so far:

  • I’m going to Egypt in March with yet another group in tow—my parents are coming this time.
  • I’m taking fourth year Arabic again in the spring semester, in large part because I will need a recommendation letter come fall when…
  • … I apply to the doctoral program in History.  Which also necessitates…
  • … taking the bloody bollocky GRE exam at some point in late spring or summer because apparently my 12 year old scores from 1998 have “expired.”
  • I have business trips lined up to San Angelo, Kilgore, Mount Pleasant, Edinburg, and Laredo, Texas.  You know you’re jealous.
  • I also have business trips on the horizon to either Savannah or Denver (probably Denver) and San Diego.
  • There is the potential—in my own mind, if not reality—for a visit to Brazil in summer.
  • And the potential for a trip to New York City in late spring.
  • And, of course, my 365 photo project.

So much to do!  But first … I’m going to have another cup of coffee.

12 of 12: December 2009

I was a bit stunned to realize that it’s December already!  Winter has moved in somewhat, as evidenced by the blizzard we got a week ago down here in the ATX, but listening to NPR, I was shocked by the realization that it’s only been a year since Bernard Madoff entered the lexicon – indeed, it’s only been a year since the word “bailout” was introduced as well.

Does that mean it’s been a long year?  Or a short one?

This is my 11th 12 of 12 for the year—my perfect record was ruined because I didn’t manage to do one in October (it would, frankly, have sent me ‘round the bend).  Bah.

9:41 am: Coffee

Cafe Yaucono, imported personally by yours truly from Puerto Rico, where they know what coffee is supposed to taste like.  (I brought back five pounds of the stuff and vacuum packed it).  Cafe Yaucono was chosen as the unanimous favorite by five out of five supermarket employees quizzed by yours truly as they walked by and were asked, “Cual de estos cafes es lo mejor?”

10:20 am: Time to make the jelly

As I lamented the other day, shortly before the hard freeze that hit last weekend, I ran out to salvage what was left of the crop off of the chili and pepper plants that started to produce again in October.  What this did was stick me with a half pound of habanero chilis, which are ridiculously hot – most salsas that use them call for half a chili, whereas I had over 30 to do something with. While I like to make my own salsa, the prospect of using all thirty up half a chili at a time was not one that I found attractive.

My Facebook pal Claire – haven’t seen her since high school, but that’s the beauty of Facebook – found a solution online in the form of a recipe for cranberry habanero jelly.  Over the years, one of the taste combinations that I’ve grown to love is spicy/sweet.  Not coincidentally, I’m a big fan of the locally produced raspberry-chipotle sauce, and its cousins that combine mango, ginger and habaneros, and peaches and habaneros.  Problem is, when peach season hit (and it hits nicely in the Texas Hill Country – you can buy a bushel at a roadside stand very cheaply), I had no habaneros.  Now that I have habaneros, the peaches are out of season.  Cranberries are a nice, seasonal alternate.

Admit it.  You’ve always wanted to see what a slurry of 3 cups of white vinegar, two cups of seeded, diced habaneros, three cups of diced red bell pepper, and a cup each of fresh and dried cranberries looks like when it’s simmering in a pot.

I don’t use my immersion blender nearly enough.  This was right before I added the 14 cups of sugar.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but Mocha hates water and getting wet.  But she smelled, so it was time for a bath, which involved much sulking.

Back at the stove, with the fruit pectin mixed in and the jelly all ladled out into individual jars.  It’s heavy on the spicy, that’s for sure.  I bought a bunch of small jars that will be used as office gifts.

It took forever for the water to come to a boil so that I could start sealing the jars.  What they say about watched pots is true.

Lunch and a couple of shows on the DVR later, Mocha starts getting a little restless because it’s time for her W-A-L-K, and she’s not going to let us forget it.

7:51 pm: At the Cajun Christmas Party

Ray’s coworker Elisa throws a Cajun Christmas party every year, ‘cos she’s a born and bred Louisiana girl.  And let’s be honest: Etouffe is just another way of saying “in lots of butter.”  There’s absolutely no bad there.

For much of the evening, I was seated in front of the rum cake and other desserts.  I was very good … although the yogurt coated pretzels did prove to be my weakness.  Whatevs.  I just won’t eat tomorrow.

I don’t know why it is that I like playing with long exposures when I’ve been drinking (this one was a 2 second exposure … and, no, I wasn’t driving – give me some credit), but I do.  I think it matches my state of mind.

Ramadan Kareem

So, I’m sitting at my desk eating lunch.  My office door is closed, and there’s a knock.  I thought I heard the voice of the other Chris in the office, so I opened it, figuring he was either coming to share gossip or ask me for something.

I open the door in mid-chew.

Instead of Chris, I found Yetkin, the guy who organized the trip to Turkey over the summer.

I cover my mouth, and mumble through food, “Hi!  How are you?”

And then I remember that it’s Ramadan.  Yetkin can’t eat or drink during the day.  And here I am stuffing my face right in front of him.

“Um,” say I, trying to chew really fast, and pulling the door closed behind me so that the food smell won’t waft out.  “Sorry … ”

It’s not the first time this week that Ramadan has reared up.  On Monday I stood in front of someone with a mug of coffee for a full ten minutes before it dawned on me.  For caffeine addicts, Ramadan’s just gotta suck.

Then there’s the friend from grad school who was stocking up on Count Chocula.  “Suhuur’s [the last chance for food before sunrise] just not suhuur without Count Chocula,” he posted on Facebook the other day.  [I should add that he's 35.]
“Yes,” I commented.  “I believe that the Prophet himself said that somewhere.”

After all, what are religious convictions for if you can’t poke fun at them?

Rest and Relaxation

My wanderings around the state have come to an end, and not a moment too soon.  I do enjoy the traveling, but there comes a point when you’re in yet another hotel chain that looks like any other hotel chain (LaQuinta?  Fairfield Inn?  Hampton Inn?  Is there a difference?) when you realize that you simply can’t face one more morning with Faux News blaring in the background over another styrofoam plate and plastic fork breakfast featuring KAW-FEE brand coffee bean product and individually wrapped English Muffins (which are neither English nor muffins.  Discuss).

There is the occasional quirkiness to be had.  Despite the fact that San Angelo–which only two years ago was proudly putting in all of its tourist literature that it had the highest murder rate west of the Mississippi between 1850 and 1870–is now trying to bill itself as the culture capitol of the Panhandle Plains (a title that is disputed by … well, no one), the town is relatively uninteresting.  A tour around town on a Sunday evening revealed a frightening number of businesses with Christian names (such as: Bible Automotive.  I’m not kidding.) and a dearth of business actually open to the public.  After eating Mexican food from a restaurant that clearly used to be a service station (the food wasn’t bad — Bobby Flay had apparently been there at one point), Natalie and I wound up at Baskin Robbins … along with half the town because, as I may have mentioned, there was nothing else open at 7 pm on a Sunday.

Then there was the unexplained psychedelic van (above) that I stopped to photograph on the way out of town.  And this place:

My most recent trip ended a scant three hours ago with a flourish and flutter (literally: the woman sitting next to me apparently cramming for a medical school exam who had refused four requests to put away her book and notes for landing seemed surprised when it all flew up the aisle upon touchdown.  That’ll learn her).

We were over in El Paso, the one place in the state that, it is regularly agreed upon, we must fly to.  I’ve heard rumors that you can drive it in under eight hours now, with the speed limit on I-10 through west Texas now legally at 80 miles per hour, but I’m more happy to reduce it to an hour and twenty minutes on Southwest Airlines.

I have always liked going to El Paso — in fact, I’ve enjoyed all of our trips to the border area, both in West Texas and down in the Rio Grande Valley (for the uninitiated among you, even though technically El Paso is on the Rio Grande, the term “Rio Grande Valley” seems to only apply to the part between Laredo and Brownsville, on the Gulf of Mexico).  We usually get groups that are really energetic and happy to learn, and this was the case with our session yesterday.  One of the guys was so enthusiastic that he engaged me in conversation in the men’s room.  I am not a particular fan of the conversation-while-I-pee.  If you see me in the men’s room, please don’t strike up a conversation until I’m at the sink, OK?

It’s also saying something about the sort of people that Natalie and I are that we kept coming back to the five or so really negative evaluations we collected at the end of the day.  There were 68 people in the room–our largest audience ever.  The vibe was overwhelmingly positive, but we still kept coming back to those negative ones.  I think somehow we just need to validate that the criticism isn’t valid–we’ve gotten unenthusiastic comments before, but this time the people who didn’t like us really didn’t like us, and they weren’t shy about expressing it.

At the end of the day, though, this last trip was a good note to end the late summer training sessions on.  We had a new audience, and they seemed to be happy with what we were doing.  The people who invited us were effervescent.  And then it was off to have a nice drink in the historic Dome Bar in the lobby of our hotel, the historic Hotel Paso del Norte.

And now … I’m home.  Next up is a trip to a conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico toward the end of September.  Technically it’s work.  I just wonder if I can put sunscreen on my expense account :D
