The Truth about Chupie

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

Well, after careful scientific analysis, it seems that the rumored {{post id=”chupacabras-are-alive-and-well-and-living-on-planet-earth” text=”chupacabra corpse”}} discovered in Cuero over the summer was actually a coyote. I can see how it might be confusing. We don’t have coyotes in Texas, normally … oh, wait…

On the flip side, if you bought the T-shirt, it might be worth something now.

Chupacabras are Alive and Well and Living on Planet Earth

Well, here’s another weird thing to come out of Cuero, Texas (which, in case you didn’t know, means leather).

It seems that a rancher down near Cuero discovered some road kill that she swears up and down is the actual, real live… er, dead, carcass of the chupacabra, the legendary Mexican goat-sucker. My favorite part of the oh-so-well written article is the bit where the author explains that said rancher would know a weird creature if she saw it because “she lived in Africa.” Which, as we all know, is a country.

Skeptics, of course, suggest that the creature is actually just a mutated dog … and that Africa is actually a collection of countries … but that hasn’t stopped our plucky rancher from putting Cuero on the map by selling T-shirts for $5. Get yours now!

The comfort of sitting on your own sofa

Back from Victoria. Austin traffic never ceases to amaze me. It took us two hours to go the 120 miles from Victoria to Natalie’s place, and it took me another fifty minutes to go the 20 miles from Natalie’s place home. Even with the new toll roads everyone is bitching about, it’s still a nightmare trying to get anywhere in this city … well, pretty much any time of the day or night.

But it’s nice to be home. Driving through the little scary towns like Cuero reminds me of how different Austin is from the rest of the state … and I’ve always enjoyed that about Austin. We don’t really have a ‘gay ghetto’ here – well, except for the usual overpriced neighborhoods, that is. But gay life in Austin is pretty well integrated into the mainstream … which is pretty offbeat here. Name another city that routinely has a homeless drag queen run for mayor and has the election scandal revolving around the fact that said drag queen isn’t actually homeless, but has property outside the city lines thus making him/her ineligible to run for mayor of Austin. And wouldn’t it be hysterically funny to see Leslie Cochran running for mayor of Westlake, the hoity-toity suburb where he/she actually lives? Oh, the blue hair would come uncurled so fast …

Serious note: Molly Ivins passed away yesterday. Adam has a nice tribute on his site – I’m too lazy tired to put something together myself, so check out his page. I always loved Molly, and I’m sorry she’s gone. She was such a local fixture around these parts that it’s hard to imagine Austin without her.

And finally, a word of advice to anyone who finds themselves in a roadside motel room tonight: remember to check whether the previous occupant of your room set the alarm clock to go off at 5 am before you go to sleep…
