Summer hibernation

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I may have mentioned this a couple of times, but it’s damned hot here in Texas.

I’ve noticed over the past decade (gosh, it’s so weird to think that as of August, I will have lived in Austin for ten years) that days like this are a psychological mindfuck. Growing up in Ohio, I had a pushy dad who always tried to shove me out the door on nice sunny summer days. “You have no business sitting inside reading on a nice day like this,” he’d say.

Usually, I just took my book outside–I’m sure that dad would have preferred that I take up a sport or something. It wasn’t until I was in college and on the bookish track that my father–in one of those rare moments of reflection–said that he’d always hoped I’d grow up to be a baseball player. (At the time, I was starting to realize that I wanted to grow up to do a baseball player — so close!)

As an adult I’ve become more attuned to things like, “Gee, I’ve been sitting inside for too long” and “The house hasn’t been aired out in months” and I still have that childhood-inspired guilt that comes from sitting inside on a nice, sunny summer day.

The mindfuck of living in the South, though, is that summertime is when we all hibernate indoors, not winter. And that goes doubly so for this year. When I flew back from Madrid on the 23rd of May, the pilot announced as we were landing in Austin that the temperature outside was 97 degrees. Since then, the coolest we’ve been is 95. Most mornings lately, it’s already 80 by the time I get to work … at 7:30 in the morning.

It’s going to be a scorcher this year. The summer that I moved here – 1998 – we had something like 60 consecutive days over 100 degrees. The State had to jump into action to help people who thought they were going to have to declare bankruptcy over their energy bills. It’s sort of looking like we’re off to the same sort of thing — a long, hot, dry summer. Everyone’s worried about rainfall this summer – in the upper midwest, they’re getting too much, and down here in the south and southeast, we’re not getting any.

But at least we’re not in a recession and the gays can’t get married down here! Whew! That makes me so much happier already.

Anyway.

I hope you’ve had a pleasant weekend – it’s father’s day! If your dad’s in town (mine isn’t – I swear, since they retired my parents are never around. Where were these interesting people with exciting lives when I was growing up?)

Look, kids, Big Ben!

When the idea was first floated that we rent a car in Spain, I had many worries.

Spain still has one of Europe’s highest auto-fatality rates, and the drivers are notoriously aggressive. There were the narrow, winding streets. Endless roundabouts with the opportunity of getting trapped and never being able to exit, like the hapless Griswold clan in European Vacation.

What I expected, in short, was a number of traffic-related challenges.

What I didn’t expect, however, were all of the car-related challenges. Such as: not being able to figure out how to put the car in reverse, unlock the doors by a method other then using the remote key fob (which requires turning the car off and removing the key from the ignition) — also, opening the trunk (boot) by any other method as well — and getting the climate control to accept anything other than “deep freeze” as an acceptable temperature.

The actual driving was fine — except for the perennial European problem of there being no parking anywhere near where you’re trying to go.

The rental car is now safely back in the hands of Hertz, and we have returned to Madrid. Tomorrow we’re off to Morocco on the second leg of what has thus far been a quite successful trip. As soon as I can get a “real” internet connection, I’ll share some photos and stuff.

And now, we’re off to the Prado. We have a date with Las Meninas.

What’s the opposite of zen?

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Well, the zen feeling that I was having Monday has gone away.

None of the little bits of bad news this morning are unmanageable, but there’s something about when you get several little bits of bad news all at once.

So, sent us the big fat form letter saying, “No money for you!”  (Actually, what they said was “We can not be encouraging about the possibility of providing funding,” which is a bizarre way of saying no.  What it truly says is “We’re saying no, but we’re not going to actually say no, but don’t contact us again.”)

The possibility that big foundation was going to just hand us the $200,000 we were looking for was a big, big, really big long shot, but we had been buoyed by the fact that the Central Development office actually let us approach them in the first place.  I’m probably more bummed than I reasonably should be, but I’ve never taken rejection well, especially because it’s a good idea, dammit!

In addition, as I mentioned in , we were evicted from our intended June workshop space.  This morning, however, our alternate venue, who told my assistant that they did have space when she talked to them on Monday, e-mailed and said, “Oh, sorry, no, it’s booked.”  So, we’re homeless again.  We’ve kinda found another alternate venue, but I’m not putting my eggs in that basket until such time as I have a confirmation slip in my hand.

So, the zen is kind of gone.  On the other hand, I have yet another trip coming up – next month I get to go to Madrid and Morocco.  Granted, it’s for a meeting, but I plan to try to sneak in a sunny afternoon at Parque Retiro anyway

Yeah, it’s a Thursday.
