Video Monday: Syphillis Girl

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Oldie but goodie today.

I don’t remember how I got on the subject, but on Friday I made the comment that someone needs to remind Nelly Furtado that she’s a) white and b) from Canada. She used to be all cute girl from next door-sy, and now? She’s all bumping and grinding and a little frightening. There’s something not quite right there, and I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Sometimes, I wish I had the cojones of someone like Glenn Beck: “Madam, prove to me that you are not working for Celine Dion.”

Good Boys

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

I made a comment on Shindo’s blog the other day about Debbie Harry. He went to see the True Colors concert that Margaret Cho and Cindi Lauper are headlining, and Debbie is one of the acts performing — she’s solo, this time, without the rest of Blondie. The comment I made is that I’m a fan of Debbie Harry in principle because I still want to be out there shaking my stuff at her age — heck, I still wanna have stuff to shake at her age. At the same time, though, the last couple of Blondie albums have been weak and with the exception of the song that was on the Grand Theft Auto III soundtrack, I don’t think I could name a single Debbie Harry solo track.

Well, I did forget one of Blondie’s recent songs that I thought was kinda catchy and thought I’d share it because the video is kinda cute … in a dark, twisted sort of way.

And so, from The Curse of Blondie, here’s “Good Boys.” Watch out for that tiger….

Video Monday: Cose della vita

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Today’s videoclip is a United Nations/Benetton wet dream: Italian pop star Eros Ramazzotti singing with Tina Turner, in a video directed by Spike Lee. Seriously.

The video is 10 years old at this point, but I still want to look as good as Tina when I’m her age. Hell, I kinda want to look as good as she does now.

update: Ack! I was wrong. Spike Lee directed the original version of the video – the Tina-less version from the Tutti Storie album. I thought this one looked a little out of character for Spike — the original, has many more typical Spike Lee elements:

Musical Interlude

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

I was goofing off this afternoon, work not being such an option because a morning visit to a local school wore me out (there’s nothing like keeping up with 4th graders to make one feel old). Then there was a staff lunch, and the Thanksgiving theme meant that turkey was a large part of the menu, with the usual food coma that follows.

So, I was goofing about on YouTube, and I found a music video for one of my very favorite songs – “Δεν μπορώ,” a song by the Greek musician Alkinoos Ioannides, whom I mentioned a few posts back. The title means “I can’t.”

It’s not the highest quality music video – after all, Greece is a relatively small country and the video was probably only shown a couple of times. Even though the song is ten years old, and Alkinoos didn’t write it himself, it’s still one of my favorite songs of his. Once I found a full translation of the lyrics (my Greek is only so good), I liked it even more.

I Can’t
If only you could slip through the darkness
if only you could fly like a fairy…
I will die this night
I will die if I don’t see you.

With sweet wine I will become
a sailor of Argo to come and find you
To meet you for a while
in the depths of my soul.

I can’t stand it, winter is hurting me
I can’t stand it anymore
I can’t stand it, snow burns my back yiard
I can’t stand it anymore

You are the touch of wind
that surprises my body
I never had enough of you,
everything was a moment.

If only you could slip through the darkness
if only you could fly like a fairy…
I will die this night
I will die if I don’t see you.

Thanks to the folks at Sitxoi.info for the lyrics and translation.

It’s a rather melancholy song, and before anyone asks, no I don’t know who the guy they keep cutting to at random intervals is…

Enjoy.
